Lead Kindly Light: Ukulele Tab

LDS Hymn Music playerIt’s an interesting find — a copy of a public domain ukulele tab for the traditional, older hymn “Lead Kindly Light.”

You can read more about the very book this page is from at Ukulele Perpsective.  You could also download a version of “My Bonnie” from there.  The pdf is of  the pages in the book before “Lead Kindly Light”.  Thanks UP.

If you don’t know “Lead Kindly Light” (as I didn’t)  you can hear the hymn sung, played as midi, or played with the various instrumental parts at the LDS music site. This link should take you directly to “Lead Kindly Light“on the LDS site.

The screen capture above shows you all the various options you have at this site with almost any hymn.  It’s really quite the array of options.

  1. You can listen to the music with parts, music only or music only.
  2. You can print the song (as you see on the right of the page) as a pdf.  Looks like it’s right out of the hymnal.
  3. You can adjust the parts.  If you want to hear just the alto, boost it and reduce the tenor, bass and soprano.
  4. You can adjust the tempo and the key.

Praise to His Name: Ukulele Chords, Native American Flute Tab

A Hymn is born

Recently I was flying for several hours and took the opportunity to acquaint myself with the new GarageBand on the iPad2.  Wow.  The flight seemed only to be an hour or two even though it was really much longer.

GarageBand on iPad2: Easier than you’d think!

While I am a fan of GarageBand for recording live instruments, I’ve not done much with the instruments you can use in the program.  With the iPad, however, you can play the piano, cue the strings, play arpeggios on the guitar and all with a touch or two.  I had too much fun.  Here’s what the interface for guitar, strings, and the tracks looks like.

As a result one of the many songs I created while flying at 568mph that day has become a favorite.

When I got home, I got my wood flute to play and record the melody lines.  You’ll notice there isn’t a ukulele in this first recording, but ironically, after coming up with the song, I prefer to strum and hum it on my ukulele — as you might well do.  The chords are F and C7 making this a rare two-chord hymn.

The Hymn: Praise to His Name

For those of you who want to play along with the GarageBand track, download this version below — you can play either your ukulele along with it and sing or play your Am wood flute along with it.

Pleasant Ukulele Playing: Andraé Crouch’s “Jesus is the Answer”

When I was an undergraduate, a group on campus (I don’t remember which one. Navigators? Campus Crusade for Christ?) used to meet and  and sing hymns.  Although I had good intentions, I attended but one or two meetings and then became ensnared in the library researching for class papers.

What I do remember about the one time I went was that they sang Andraé Crouch’s  ”Jesus is the Answer.”  Everyone harmonized.  It was a beautiful sound.

And so, as I looked for which Easter hymn I would post this week, “Jesus is the Answer” kept entering my head.  And when I haven’t thought of a song for years, I figure there’s a reason for that particular song being brought to my attention.

You will be delighted to know that C, G, F  are the chords you need to play Crouch’s hymn.   The picking pattern …
